History

Our Lady of El Cisne is one of the most beloved Marian devotions in Ecuador. Her story began in 1594, when the indigenous people of the village of El Cisne, located in the southern province of Loja, were suffering through a severe drought. As many families prepared to leave their homes in search of food and water, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherd, encouraging the people to remain and trust in God's providence.

Inspired by this heavenly visitation, the villagers commissioned a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The image was carved by the renowned Spanish sculptor Diego de Robles. The statue became a source of hope and countless reports of answered prayers and miracles soon spread throughout Ecuador and beyond.

Today, millions of pilgrims travel each year to the Basilica of El Cisne in Loja, especially during the annual pilgrimage held every August. Devotion to Our Lady of El Cisne has become a cherished expression of faith for Ecuadorians around the world.

Annual Celebration of Our Lady of El Cisne

In July 2025, the beautiful statue of Our Lady of El Cisne at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Island was lovingly donated by the Ecuadorian Catholic community of Long Island and neighboring areas as a lasting expression of their devotion to the Blessed Mother.

Through the generosity, hard work, and dedication of many volunteers and benefactors, the community also built the chapel where the statue is now enshrined. Today, it serves as a place of prayer and pilgrimage for people of every nationality who come seeking Mary's intercession and the peace that comes from her Son, Jesus Christ.

Each year, the Shrine of Our Lady of the Island welcomes thousands of pilgrims for one of the largest Marian celebrations on Long Island: the Feast of Our Lady of El Cisne.

This joyful celebration is deeply rooted in the faith and traditions of the Ecuadorian Catholic community, but it is truly a celebration for everyone. Visitors of every nationality are warmly invited to experience this beautiful expression of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The day begins with prayer and a serenade to Our Lady, followed by a festive atmosphere throughout the Shrine. Pilgrims gather from across New York and neighboring states to honor Our Lady of El Cisne through prayer, music, and fellowship.

The highlight of the day is the solemn outdoor procession, during which the statue of Our Lady of El Cisne is carried through the Shrine grounds by members of the faithful. Hundreds of pilgrims walk together praying and singing hymns in honor of the Blessed Mother before gathering for the celebration of the Holy Mass.

Following the Mass, visitors enjoy traditional Ecuadorian music, colorful folkloric dances, delicious Ecuadorian food, and the opportunity to spend time with family and friends in a joyful atmosphere of faith and community.
